Demilune Console Tables - A Great Place For Your Keys And Such

May 5th, 2009

Demilune console tables can potentially serve as one of the most important pieces of furniture in your entire home. This table is characterized by its semi circular shape and lowers than average table height. Additionally, the demilune table style often stands on three legs. While these pieces of furniture tend to be smaller than the average household tables, it actually in many homes can serve as the most prominent.
Why are demilune console tables so influential in making an overall impression of your house? The reason for this is that these tables more often than not are located in the front walkway or foyer. In other words, they are the first real substantial piece of furniture that your guests see upon entering your abode and also the last item they see upon exiting. It is imperative, then, to use care when picking out a demilune console table for your residence.
There are many options to choose from when it comes to the design and style of these pieces of furniture. The smartest thing to do before venturing out to purchase one is to do a little online shopping, or browsing, in order to see the widest variety of tables for your time and convenience. Then, go see some tables in person at your local furniture warehouse or specialty independent furniture shop. Comparison shopping to find the best prices is always smart, but remembers, this item is one of the main focal points of your home. Don't let price alone let you sacrifice the quality.
There are many different styles to choose from for your new table. Anywhere from rustic designs, to retro chic for the more eccentric type to elegant glass or mahogany tables are available in most furniture stores. Be sure, while shopping for your table, though, that you take into consideration the dйcor of your entire house. Remember, this item is the last thing guests see upon departing. You don't want to leave them with a strange sense of unease just because the foyer demilune was an antique and the rest of the home's dйcor was contemporary. Even if you can't match the entire household's furniture set completely, at least choose items that compliment each other in style. If you are shopping offline for your demilune piece, you may even think about carrying along with you photographs of your other room's furniture. Not only will you be able to visualize your house's interior in its new entirety but you can also ask the opinions of the design specialists at the various stores in which you shop.
So what do you do with the demilune furniture now that you have it? There are many options. Use your imagination to mount a piece of artwork or mirror on the wall behind the table or place individual items, plants or picture frames on its surface.
The front room or foyer's crescent shaped table is also a great place for your keys. Consider selecting a model with a drawer or cabinet where you tuck your key ring away in a place that is hidden enough to prevent tackiness and convenient enough to remember every time you leave the house. Never lose your keys again with this designated drawer. This technique of keeping your keys in the same, reachable location day after day will save you time and frustration for years to come.

Decoupage Tools And Equipment

May 5th, 2009

One of the advantages of decoupage is that it requires very little equipment, and it's likely that you already possess the tools that you need to get started. However, there are items that can be helpful in your decoupage, if not strictly necessary. These will vary according to the exact work you plan to do. Let's first look at the tools you can't manage without.
Scissors
It's best to have a pair of scissors put aside solely for decoupage. Certain things can gradually blunt scissors, and you want to keep yours as sharp and clean as possible. Embroidery scissors, which come to a very sharp point, are good for this sort of work. You can also buy curved scissors, which can be helpful in cutting out awkward shapes. You can keep your scissors sharp by cutting fine sandpaper.
Glue
White PVA glue makes an excellent medium, although you may want to dilute it a little with water before using it. This will give you a similar product to specially made decoupage medium. There are many brands of glues available, some made specifically for decoupage. They will have instructions for use on the bottle. For simple projects, you can mix two parts clear drying craft glue with one part water. Some glues may need to be diluted further. Wallpaper paste can be used for large areas. Decoupage mediums or glues may be used full strength, except on glass where they should be diluted. Decoupage glue has a slower drying time, which is useful if you're inexperienced as it allows you to reposition items. There are a number of recipes available for making your own glue if you find it difficult to obtain decoupage glue.
Glaze
Mix together three parts PVA glue with one part water. Add more water if necessary. Add two tablespoons of varnish, for shine. Put into a screw top container.
Glue
ј cup of sugar
ј cup of flour
Ѕ teaspoon of powdered alum
1ѕ cups of water
ј teaspoon of oil of cinnamon
Mix the sugar, flour, and alum in a medium sized saucepan.
Gradually add the one cup of water, stirring vigorously to break up any lumps. Boil until clear and smooth. Stir constantly. Remove from heat and add the remaining water and oil, stirring until thoroughly mixed. Put into a screw top container.
Slow Drying Glue
Add one part glycerin to four parts glue.
Varnish
The type of varnish you choose will depend on the use to which the item is to be put and how you want it to look. You can use a water-based varnish, which won't yellow, or oil based varnish to give a yellow tint for an aged look. Lacquer, which comes in spray-on cans, is easy to use for large objects.
Water based varnish is less likely to run and dries quickly. It's also heat resistant to a point and scuff resistant. Although it has a milky appearance, it dries clear. This varnish works well on wood and glass because it is thin and easy to apply. It's available in gloss, matt and satin. You need to apply it smoothly and evenly and wash your brushes and applicators in soapy water immediately after use. As it dries clear, it works well on bright colors. Water based varnish is the best to use if you're working in a small space owing to the fumes produced by oil based varnish.
Remember that the final coat defines the finish so is you decide that you'd rather have a matte than gloss finish; use a matte varnish for your final coat.
Cotton Swabs
These are used to spread the glue around. They are a very inexpensive alternative to paint brushes.
Damp Rag
This will help you to wipe up any excess glue that leaks out, as you don't want the residue to lie on top.

Decoupage Is An Art Based On Good Old Scissors

May 5th, 2009

In the decoupage process, after applying the gold/silver leaf, leave it for 24 hours before sealing. Many books recommend that you shellac after gilding. If you don't have shellac on hand, you may choose to opt for your sealer. Decoupage is an art which is mainly done using scissors, but experts use other different stuff to enhance their work. Like using paper punches, quilling strips or stickers. But note that you do not use all these ideas in any competition because usually there are certain rules in any competition which would not allow you too use other forms of art in your decoupage project. But definitely when it comes to gifts and sales items, anything is permissible that you want to use.
Stickers can also be used to decoupage your object. But since they are thick, you will need to apply loads of varnish on them to make your work smooth. They can ideally be used on coasters and tablemats.Even quilling strips can be used in this craft. Quilling strips are available in many colors, even in metallic gold and silver colors. These are easily available with the traders who are into supplying card making materials. Its fun to use them especially the metallic ones and they truly look wonderful when used for framing pictures in boxes or making borders around the edges.
The paper must not have any dust flakes or grit on it. If required paint the paper and leave it for 24 hours to get dry before start. Ensure that it has a slight friction like kind of a bit sanded so that the gum sticks to it properly. It's recommended not to decoupage any object before you prepare that object perfectly. First thing required is it should be dry. Then you may need to clean any dirt on it, or you may need to paint it or seal it. The surface may also require a bit of sanding.
You can also create 3D effect decoupage. For this you will first need to cut many copies of the same picture and then with the help of double sided adhesive foam strips, pads, glue dots or silicone glue create different layering thus giving a 3D effect. Note that the layers are not same in size but they get smaller as you move on.
If you are a new comer, you would be advised to use foam pads and glue dots since these are easier to use but to give your work a real touch you must use silicone glue. In case you are a new comer, to assemble your artwork nicely and at the same time easily, you must print each layer of your pattern separately with only the detail needed for some particular layer. Newcomers should seek lessons from craft teachers such as Papa Christopher Freville, Idaho and Julie-Ann Sharman, British Columbia.
When you decoupage an object, first of all, the base surface of the project is covered with the largest layer and then you move on with each of the successive layers to finally finish up the object. Note that the first layer is the largest and as you move on the layer's size diminishes. Beginners are advised to number each of their layers before actually assembling them in to the project. Creating decoupage of objects from similar pictures can also be done but its a bit tricky task because for this you got to know which portions of the image would be removed from each successive layer.
Use some shaping tool or your finger to give the finished product some real natural look. Like you can curl up the petals of the flower to make it appear more round and real. To give the project a glossy effect, apply a coat of varnish on it. This may not be because since some papers are naturally lustrous.

Decorating Picture Frames And Boxes For Decoupage

May 5th, 2009

You need to take proper care when cutting a very detailed design, like a leaf edge. Use your left hand to turn the paper as required, and cut the details of the design using your scissors.
When cutting designs like grass or fur, be innovative enough to add your own long curves if possible. In case you do not find some patterns good enough for your project like a blank portion in the picture or some straight edges, then you can cut away them from your image.
Once the design is ready to be pasted cut the bridges. In case the design is too delicate, you will need to put gum on the object and then paste the cut design. Use a moist sponge to clean any extra glue. Keep the sponge pieces handy when working with this technique. After wiping put your sponge piece in water. Because once the glue on it gets dried up, it would deface the sponge. Clean these sponge pieces properly with water and save for future use in your next project.
Fold and cut technique can give marvelous effects to your design. You can take colored pages from magazines and books and create symmetrical and beautiful designs using this technique. These designs can also be photocopied to make some layered/repeat design.
To decorate picture frames and sides of boxes, you can use cut corner patterns and other interesting shapes. You can cut coiled borders and repeat designs. For this you can cut it like a string or else outline your pattern on the paper and copy and cut it as many number of times as you require. Although it would not result in exact copies, but would be appreciably same.
Before pasting them, you will need to paint the white edges in your image. You can use a permanent marker or acrylic paint to color this. These colors actually blend nicely with your image. Maximum time's sepia or black would solve your purpose but in a few cases you may need to go in for other hues too.
If required the images can be pasted one on another. Images reaching over the edges give a beautiful effect in a box. You can paste both the lid and the box with the whole image. Canadian artist Christopher Freville often uses Victorian photos for pasting on the side of a box. Once the paste dries up simply make a cut at the joint of the lid and the box. This way the pattern would exactly correlate to each other.
You can use a blue TAC to place your cut outs at as desired and then sketch your boundaries using a pencil or chalk. This way you would know which cut out should be glued where. Blue TAC can also be used to trace the place to paste the cut out. And obviously this needs to be done gluing every cut out piece one by one.
Only if your base surface has extremely good color and luster that you will not need to cover it thoroughly but otherwise you got to cut good number of prints from magazines or gift wraps so that they sufficient to cover the whole object. While cutting you should keep in mind that you have kept enough space to let the prints overlap slightly.
Before gluing experiment with different lay outs in which you can place your picture. Once you get a satisfactory look, paste it using your fingers and slightly press the print from the center towards its edges, thus avoiding any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Decorating For Special Occasions

May 5th, 2009

Decorating your home and office for special occasions can sure warm up your holiday celebration environment, not to mention add fun to your holiday activities. But in order to avoid adding to much stress to your holiday event, you need to decorate at your own pace and don't go overboard, putting a lot of time and effort into this, so that you can reap the most rewards - and not stress.
To help, here are some suggestions for your own decorating activities. Take each one and make it unique to your own home or business and festive environment. For example, you might take the mantle display and add some coordinating fall-colored throw pillows or blankets to your couch plus light a pumpkin scented candle and your whole family room will have that special thankful (Thanksgiving) feel to it.
Suggestions to customize:
Mantle Display
The mantle over your fire place is the perfect place to decorate. For a simple display, arrange some pumpkins or decorative ornaments on the mantle along with a few candles. A fall or winter garland or wreath is also a nice touch above the mantle.
Seasonal Flower Arrangement
Stop by your local florist for some flowers in yellow or orange or order some from an online gift shop. Arrange them in a vase along with some greenery.
Yard Display
Decorate the front yard with a wooden figure or sign. For a little color, plant a few mums, either in the ground, or in pots and planters.
Special Gift Basket or Wreath
Purchase or make a simple grapevine wreath and / or gift basket and decorate it with seasonal leaves and miniature fruits or plants. Add a nice bow and place the basket on a center table and hang the wreath on the front door. A festive wreath is a great way to welcome your guests in. And a gift basket is a nice way to invite guests to enjoy a quick snack of fruits, crackers and candies.
Fruits & Veggies
You can make a beautiful arrangement by setting out some fresh fruit and miniature pumpkins and ears of corn. Look for yellow and purple varieties of corn for an authentic fall feel. Scatter them across your dining table, or arrange them in a bowl for a nice centerpiece.
Display Kids Artwork
Not only will your home be beautifully decorated, but you'll be building your children's self-esteem at the same time. Buy a few inexpensive frames and set them out or hang them on the wall. This is of course also a great way to display your child's artwork year round.
Traditional Themes
There are quite a few ways to incorporate traditional themes like the first Thanksgiving in your decorations. Create a small scale version of this special occasion by setting out a few figurines of pilgrims and Native Americans. Complete the scene with a small table, some turkeys and miniature trees to show that the first Thanksgiving took place outside.
Check books from your local library for more ideas. And add some festivity to your home and business environment. Make your own or visit fun shops online. Decorating can be as simple as that!

Decorate Your Dollhouse Exterior To Make An Enormous Impact

May 5th, 2009

With so much attention given to the interior decoration of your dollhouse, it can be easy to overlook what a difference some exterior design and decorating can make. By spending some time and a few dollars on the exterior aesthetics of your dollhouse, you can give the scene a feeling of completion, instead of a house that is just well decorated on the inside.
The opportunities for enhancing your dollhouse's exterior design are nearly limitless. Think of how you'd want to spruce up your own home's exterior and try to add some landscaping effects to your dollhouse's outdoor space. Creating a small garden can be very nice, and you can add some miniature wicker furniture. You'll also have an excuse to expand your crafting abilities to learn new design techniques or how to build just the right piece of furniture.
Some miniature collectors like to create outdoor spaces that look like they are being lived in. An outdoor space that is tastefully scattered with children's lawn games and swing sets give a sense of reality to your miniature display. If you can add some pets to the scene then it may make it seem even more like a place where a typical family would spend a summer afternoon.
Trying to replicate realism is important to a dollhouse. There are many additions you can make that add to the look of a true home. Features such as a mailbox, trees, or a driveway aren't ones you'd think to add at first glance, but once you do, you'll wonder how your dollhouse ever looked complete without them. Attention to small outdoor details and usual features we find around our own homes makes a big difference in your display.
Many miniature collectors enjoy changing the look of their dollhouse exterior each season. Just as you'd decorate for the holidays, you can string your dollhouse with miniature lights. If it's time for summer barbecues, adding a tiny grill to your dollhouse patio adds more realism. When your dollhouse is set for winter seasons and it's full-blown spring outside, your scene may look out of place.
However you choose to utilize your creative abilities on the exterior of your dollhouse, keep in mind that there isn't really a right or wrong way to do it. As long as you make sure the exterior scale matches the interior scale you can decorate the exterior however you want without ruining the integrity of the display.

Decorate With A Hanging Wall Tapestry

May 5th, 2009

A hanging wall tapestry can be a joy not only for the owner but for all those who happen to visit and look upon it. This style of decoration is truly ancient, going back centuries to a time when a hanging wall tapestry was more than just something to look at.
The hanging wall tapestry is an art form. Hanging wall tapestry has also been used as a record for historical events, for recording births and deaths of not only the rich and famous but also the poor. It has been used for religious purposes, and for cultural purposes. For some reason, people all over the world for as long as we can imagine have used this craft to share their thoughts, feelings, lives, and other important information with those who look upon the work.
In some cases, as with the Celtics, the form consisted of intricate woven designs and shapes that depict either nature or the gods. In other cases, the form was much more intricate and elaborate. In all cases, the craftsperson had to devote many hours of work in order to finish the vision that he or she first started with.
Mythology has often played a big part in the form. The ancient Chinese were fond of creating works that honored the dragon. The dragon was also popular with the ancient Celtic peoples. For both cultures, the dragon was a symbol of wisdom, vision, and knowledge. It was also considered a guardian against evil invaders.
On the religious front, the Celtic cross has been a favorite of many for ages. This beautiful rendition of a cross is often crafted in subdued colors to reflect the spirit of the Christian to all nations. It is no wonder it is still one of the most sought after pieces in that it brings a sense of peace to those who own and display one.
The peoples of India have been perfecting their skills at this craft for hundreds of years and their offerings are endlessly stunning. Other works of art will often portray various animals, often from the jungles. A popular animal is the elephant, another is the tiger. Both of these, animals hold special meaning to the people who craft the work. In addition to the animal motif, these works often have brilliant colors and very intricate designs associated with them. In some patterns, the viewer may feel as if he or she is being drawn into a maze work. They are truly amazing works of art.
For those who prefer something less formal, there are also works that are fashioned through the old tie dye method. This was a very popular way of dying material in the 1960's in America, and it is making a comeback. One thing about a tie dye work is that it will be unique. No two pieces ever come out the same, which is one of its main attractions for many people. The freedom to use just about any color combination imaginable is also a major factor.
Our products will delight and enchant you. We hope to inspire your imagination and creativity.

Deal Or No Deal: Howie Mandel’s Game Show Success

May 5th, 2009

Are you tired of Reality TV shows, soap operas, and reruns? Then why not try something different and watch a game show? If you think game shows are silly or boring, then you haven't seen Deal or No Deal. Deal or No Deal is quickly becoming one of the most popular television game shows of all time. It is viewed by millions of people in countries all around the world. Many of the different countries have their own version of Deal or No Deal.
In America, the show airs on NBC and is hosted by Howie Mandel. Mandel also hosts the English version of Deal or No Deal in Canada. You may remember Mandel as a wild stand up comic, or as an intern on St. Elsewhere. For Deal or No Deal, Mandel has adopted a more serious but personable demeanor. He has hosted the show since it debuted in December 2005 and his popularity has risen right along with the game show.
An interesting tidbit about Howie Mandel is that he has a fear of germs and does not shake hands with anyone, including the contestants on Deal or No Deal. He will use other gestures such as slaps on the back or shoulder, but stops short of shaking hands unless he has gloves on. It does not affect the show at all. In fact Mandel's charming personality has been at least part of the reason for the shows amazing success.
Of course, the game show also owes a great deal of its success to the fact that it is truly a fascinating and suspenseful game to watch and be a part of. It shows that the producers take great care in screening the potential candidates so that the ones with the best personalities make it to the show. This serves to make the show more exciting to watch and it also helps the audience to have an almost instant rapport with each contestants.
The game itself is full of twists and turns and is always full of surprises. Each game is different based on the order the suitcases are opened, so one doesn't know what to expect from the game or the contestants. Different contestants react in different ways. Some are conservative and take very few if any risks. Some others will decline to accept a nice size offer from the bank just on a wild chance they can win the million dollars.
In all, the rapid success and loyal following Deal or No Deal has garnered seems to be well deserved. It is a fascinating game to watch and the suspense is skillfully manipulated by Mandel, particularly when he uses the telephone to call the mysterious banker who is portrayed as a shadowy figure behind glass walls.
